Koma Get It

Ladies and Gentleman (if there are gentlemen reading my blog kudos--give me a call sometime), it's that time of the year again: Fashion Weeks! One designer who has captured my attention the last few years has been David Koma. This Georgian designer created some beautiful silhouettes with his Japanese martial arts inspired A-lined dresses. I was particularly taken with how he played with shapes and exposure. Pantone also identified the shade of blue featured in Koma's show, "Dazzling Blue," as being the 2014 color of spring. This color was featured in 17% of designer's runway shows over the course of New York, London, and Milan Fashion Weeks including Philip Lim, Topshop Unique, and Ohne Titel to name a few. Because of the combination of the Pantone Color of Spring 2014 and the beautiful look of David Koma's runway collection I decided to replicate it on my nails.

To start I painted a coat of butter LONDON's Nail Foundation Flawless Basecoat. Next on my pointer and ring finger I painted the whole nail with two coats of Essie's Mesmerize. The thumb and pinky were a little more tricky because I wanted to mimic the peekaboo concept of some of Koma's looks without using tape (i prefer doing it freehand, but feel free to use tape if that works better for you). I used Mesmerize on the thumb, starting from the bed of the nail but leaving a horizontal strip of Nail Foundation visible in the center of the nail and then continuing up the tip. On the pinky I outlined a "V" shape of the Nail Foundation and filled in the remaining part of the nail with Mesmerize to the tip. On The middle finger I painted two coats of O.P.I.'s Alpine Snow. Then Using Alpine Snow, I painted the stripes and details on the thumb, ring finger, and pinky. To finish the design I painted one coat of SV topcoat on every nail but the pointer finger. On that finger I used Essie's Matte About You matte topcoat as a sort of tribute to the actual runway nails which were matte royal blue.

While I liked the design for the first 20 minutes I got bored fast and fell in love with the thumb nail and the thumb nail alone. What's a nail blogger to do? Take out the remover and the subsequent eight nails, that's what. So basically I replicated the design on the thumb nail on every nail and decided I didn't like it nearly as much (the whole premise of "if you had Christmas every day it wouldn't be special anymore" (debatable but still)). I left it on, because let's face it you can only coat your nails in acetone so many times in one day, but I don't love it. What do you think of designs 1 and 2?
